Teacher Toolkit: Rethink Props

Go beyond modifications and discover what yoga props can really do

Discover creative and unexpected ways to use props to build strength, explore mobility, add challenge, offer support and bring new possibilities into the poses you already teach.

You don't need more poses, you need more possibilities

Yoga props are often treated as modifications, something we bring in when a student can’t do the “regular” version of a pose.

But that’s only a tiny piece of what they can do.

In this free 90-minute workshop, we’ll play with blocks, straps, blankets, chairs, walls and more to explore what happens when we stop thinking of props as support for the pose and start thinking of them as tools for teaching and learning.

And this isn't about collecting a bunch of clever prop tricks.

We'll explore the WHY behind what we're doing, so you can start looking at familiar poses differently, thinking more creatively and making your own intentional teaching choices.

This is for you if:

  • You're feeling a little bored or uninspired by the same poses, sequences and prop options.

  • Want fresh ideas you can actually use in your classes.

  • Want to understand more of the why behind what you teach.

  • Feel more confident getting creative instead of wondering if you’re doing it “right.”

  • Or you simply suspect your yoga blocks could be doing a whole lot more than they currently are!

What You'll Learn

How to make familiar poses feel completely different
Small changes in where and how we use a prop can change the strength, mobility, balance and movement experience of a pose.

How props can add challenge — not just make things easier
We'll use props to play with load, leverage, stability and feedback in ways you might not have tried before.

How to get more out of the poses you already teach
You don't necessarily need another 100 poses or sequences. Learn how changing the setup can open up entirely new possibilities.

How to use props with a purpose
Instead of adding a block because you saw someone else do it, start understanding why you might choose it and what you're actually trying to explore.

How props can create more choice without creating a “lesser” version of the pose
Move beyond the idea that props are just modifications for people who can't do the “full pose.”

And plenty of “Wait... I've never thought of using a prop like THAT” moments.

You'll leave with new ideas you can use in your very next class — and a new way of thinking that can make your teaching feel more creative, confident and inspired.

About Brea

Brea Johnson

A yoga teacher since 2003, I've been integrating applied anatomy, mobility and functional movement into yoga asana for over 10 years (before it was cool!) since my "yoga extensional crisis" when I became disillusioned with the yoga world's focus on commercialization, hypermobility and guru-like teachers.

At that time, I almost quit yoga but instead furthered my education with applied anatomy, biomechanics and from there, Heart + Bones Yoga was born.

Heart + Bones Yoga is now a large, thriving global community with our online yoga studio and education courses, with over 500 teachers certified through our yoga teacher trainings. It's been hugely rewarding over the past couple of years to see more people and yoga teachers embracing this approach to yoga.

I'm excited to move out of the box and exploring all the various ways we can play with props to make our yoga classes even better for the people in them. I look forward to the questions and discussions; see you in the workshop!
